4819730The mission of the Department is the development, promotion, spread and application of knowledge related to athletics, competitive sports, physical activity and health. The students have the chance to acquire leadership, communication and team skills, through the interactive processes and challenges embedded in the learning processes and research opportunities of the educational environment of our department.

Our Department also endeavors to equip graduates with the professional proficiency and maturity that are consistent to the requirements of the job market as this is shaped in Greece. The promotion of an active lifestyle comprises an additional objective in whose context active living conditions and behaviors are adopted, as students themselves have the chance to develop their physical abilities and athletic skills.

Postgraduate studies

The Department of Physical Education and Sport Science of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science at Democritus University of Thrace, in accordance with Law 4485/2017 (Government Gazette A’ 114), which redefined the framework for postgraduate studies in Higher Education in Greece, leveraging its extensive experience in organizing postgraduate programs (since 1993), has been offering, since the academic year 2018-2019, new intensive postgraduate programs for specialization in the department's fields of study, specifically:

Studies

852951The Democritus University of Thrace’s Department of Physical Education and Sport Science (DPESS) offers a degree in Physical Education and Sport Science. Matters relating to the curriculum, the studies regulation and postgraduate studies are governed by the legal provisions in force concerning universities. The minimum duration of studies in order to obtain a degree is 8 semesters. A graduate of the DPESS is entitled to:

a. Teach physical education and sport science at all levels of education, at sport clubs and in all working and social activity environments.

b. Teach courses relevant to the physical education science.

c. Use exercise as a means to enhance the physical condition and health of people of all ages, whether healthy people or people with special needs, or those with heart and other chronic diseases.
